Creating and managing bank rules.

Bank rules are great for saving time so that we know how you like certain transactions to be categorised in a particular way.

For example, let's say you bought some office supplies from Officeworks. You can create a rule so that anytime you purchase something from Officeworks, QuickBooks Self-Employed will mark any new transactions from Officeworks as Business: Office Supplies.

Rules only apply to new spending or income going forward, unless you check the box to apply to past transactions as well.

If you turn a rule off, you won't change any of the work you've done in the past.

To create new rule

iOS:
  1. Tap the cogwheel in the upper left corner.
  2. Tap Rules
  3. Tap the plus sign (+) in the upper right corner of the Rules page.
  4. Add a description and choose whether to match exactly.
  5. Select the category you want all future transactions with this description to have.
  6. Tap Save in the upper left corner.
  7. Select whether to apply this rule to all past and future transactions or only transactions going forward.

Android:
  1. Tap the hamburger (â¡) menu in the upper left of screen  .

  3. Tap the plus sign (+) in the lower right corner of the Rules page.
  4. Add a description and choose whether to match exactly.
  5. Choose Business, Personal, or Split, and then select the category (and split amounts, if applicable) you want all future transactions with this description to have.
  6. If you want the rule to apply only to a specific account, tap the Advanced field and select an account.
  7. Tap Save in the upper right corner.
  8. Select whether to apply this rule to all past and future transactions or only transactions going forward.

Alternatively, when you swipe left on a transaction, you can tap Create rule in the blue field to open the steps above.
